STERLING PRESENTATION CUP AND COVER

Hallmarks are located on handles, inside cover and body . Made in Dublin Ireland by John Smyth with date letter of 1859-1860. Stamps also show Dublin Hibernia and Harp sterling stamp and providence with Queen Victoria in reign at the time. Heavy quality and very desirable, This cup originally was produced for presentation in Irish Sweepstakes for Doncaster Races and Richmond Races. Very popular in Ireland from Dublin, cups were made as far back as 1750 for Lord Dundas. Victorian cup is of campana shape with leaf capped scroll entwined handles. Raised on a round high foot decorated with heavy fruit and foliate pattern of melon and pomegranate, grape repousse detail. Decorated body in scenes of farm life with high detail chasing of animal and fowl and family figures working with scenes raised of structures and valley on a stippled background. Large removable cover with double dome shape decorated border of repousse floral pattern and chasing and large cast finial with figural putti of Infant Bacchus in standing form with fruit wreath perched atop head. The presentation Cup and Cover is a magnificent piece of skilled
silversmithing by John Smyth and remarkable condition. Excellent at this writing.
